depends on how bad u wipeout -hold breath anywhere from 5-20 seconds usually,ure body is screaming for oxygen though so it can be pretty tough.boards are snaped all the time in these waves u just gotta swim in- wich is punishing! gotta be fit man.

Aloha quad, how long does a surfer who wipes out in these kind of waves usually have to hold their breath? When the waves are this big, do you just lose your board? Do you keep your eyes open as your body goes "washing machine"? Do the waves normally come in a certain sequence? Mahalo!
